Stopped about 1/3 way through and didn't budge until the battery ran out hours later. Nikon said "sorry, ship at your cost and we will fix. Too bad about your trip in two days."

So sorry to hear that. Often they recommend full battery to start? But sounds like something went wrong during the transfer, maybe a corrupted file? Any chance you can rent another Z9 before your trip? Or have a back-up camera which is okay (though not the best). Haven't heard of this by others (and my transfer went fine) though I am sure that is little comfort to you. Good luck.
Thanks. Rental was prohibitive. Battery had 91% at start of update.
I'm starting to think that the Z9 is a beta camera issue. Look at the Z9 failure over at Steve Perry's site.
Nikon was in a very big hurry to get the Z9 out...

This is why a backup camera is critical. One week into a 3 week trip that included 2 weeks in China, the shutter on my main camera broke. I shot the rest of the trip with the backup camera. The backup camera had most of the capabilities of the main camera, so I didn't lose any opportunites.

Larry, do you have a link to Steve's issue as I couldn't find anything on his site. Thanks

Thanks - found it. I've shot well over 20k photos with my Z9 and so far no issues. I updated the firmware as soon as it came out and never an issue. Nikon may need to re-evaluate their quality controls during manufacturing.
Additionally, I bought a Watson battery for my Z9 as a backup which enables me to keep the camera awake (no sleep timer) continually so that I don't miss a shot. No issues using the Watson battery either.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I had no issues loading firmware 3.0 to my Z9. Whenever I do a firmware update on my Nikons, I am always super careful to make sure the camera with the card installed is on a firm and flat surface before I start the update so nothing moves during the update.
The issue could be with your card, card reader or cable used to download the firmware to the card. I admit that this is not likely to be the problem, but I would double check everything associated with the whole process.

Sorry for your issue as well. I have two Z9 and I have hammered them (taken 60k+ shots since new). Absolutely NO issues. Send yours to Nikon and I'm sure you will get it back quickly at their cost. Let us know. Best of luck.

I agree, always have a backup camera ready and take on any trip. Can you borrow a decent camera for your trip from any friends, if you cant rent one? Dont go without one for sure.
So sorry for your issue. All it takes is an instantaneous interruption during data transfer, any glitch and that can stall the update and leave you with a messed up operating system. Not just a Nikon issue, this can happen with any brand.
I always keep hands off and dont touch or move anything when I am updating my gear. This Nikon V3.0 update was so huge in size, there was a lot of data to move.
Cheers and best to you.
Thanks for all of your responses. I do have a backup camera. It updated fine. I guess I forgot to hold my breath for 6 min.
