Financial issues also pay a role. When I was in high school and college {now, over 50 years ago}, I used a Instamatic 100, because that is what I could afford. I used college graduation money to buy a rangefinder camera, because that is what that money would cover. Today I have a limit of $1K because I have other uses for that money.

$1K? By buttons are being pushed by a Hasselblad with good AI and wings too. I need 2.5K!

I choose to use ‘lower tier’ cameras {certainly not flagships}, and remind myself that I have other uses for that money.

Yes! Exactly. But, the desire for this flying Hasselblad is getting deeper in my heads left brain's gotta get it section. My right brain is fighting hard to maintain control and discipline.

I trully believe that amateur photographers will always be happy with anything that takes pictures. Nowdays none or very few amateurs print their photos so, they are happy with seeing the images on the tiny sceen. Not like the old days when people purchased a point and shoot camera and printed 3.5x5 or 4x6 photos. Not anymore.

When I went to my Daughter's wedding in Italy (Sorrento), in 2019 I was the only person in the crowd with my Sony A6000, all other people used their smartphones(except for wedding Italian photographer with full frame Panasonic)..
I felt like a dinosaur among contemporary young crowds with iPhones .

Probably a good thing. It might keep companies from dwelling on the popular markets making their expensive cameras---ALL PROSUMER----as they once denigraded all but their top cameras. They have tried to capture the well healed amateurs to buy top-of line by adding point and shoot features to the very best bodies?

Maybe this might make an actual distinction between all pro cameras and the hermaphrodites existing today---pro-sumer called professional and professional called pro-sumer by the lame-brained critics?

But the same with the Point and Shoot people of 20 years ago. Back then I was taking film at my niece's wedding which everybody held up the P&Ss---but I presume my photos were better, just as yours from Italy? I have never felt out of place with competent photo gear. Even using flash bulbs.-----ew

Yet another useless post. So far this year we have had to endure more than 100 such posts.Phones are great for snapshots. I even use one myself.
But phones will never replace mirrorlrss cameras. And no, phones haven't replaced interest in mirrorless cameras. And yes, this is a pointless post. Why do I even bother.
I know in a few days or tomorrow someone else will ask the SAME question. And we will all give our same responses, and we will go on and continue to use our mirrorless camera's. And we will go on using our phones for snapshots. YEAKS

If it is a useless question for you Bill Nikon..why do you bother to answer indeed ?
Technology evolves rapidly and no matter what you say it will surprise us very quickly.Take for example gasoline cars.
They are getting replaced with electrical vehicles, Florida Power & Light (FPL) is starting to build charging stations throughout FL....and soon gasoline cars will become white elephants in the sea of EVs.

"Quality" is now being defined as "Effortless." And or "Fits my Needs"

Apple is actively pursuing customers for their iPhone products. By comparison Canon, Nikon, et. al. are sitting on their laurels and waiting for customers to flock to their products. Guess which philosophy is gaining headway. One company is selling like mad while the others are not. The "quality" of which you speak is for "snap shots" and "point and shoot" photographs only. "Quality" is now being defined as "Effortless."

Are motorcycles killing trucks?

Is the same kind of question... Cellphones are great for casual photography and bear a great success in democratizing photography.

Cellphones are cleverly limited to what 99.9% of the people want to shoot: group photos, travel...

On the other hand MILCs and DSRs are like trucks: big, heavy, and can carry a lot of stuff.
No matter how good a motorcycle gets, it never will outgrow a truck.

You can't do off camera flash photography with a cellphone, nor action sports, wildlife, long telephoto scenery...

I agree. How about someone comparing the subject tracking of the A7R5 to the iPhone 14 Pro. A different take on the question would be interesting.

Are motorcycles killing trucks? br br Is the same... (show quote)

and no matter how much you look down in them, they will serve a useful purpose. It must be painful for you to see them thrive when people don’t appreciate your Sony/Canon/Nikon.
