I think some people like the technology of cameras (I'm one of them), and some people like to snap pictures throughout the day. Cameras for the first group and phones for the second. Of course, there is a third group: those who like to take great pictures with a good quality phone.

Are you saying that smartphones aren’t cameras? If not, how do they take pictures? Perhaps a name change to "smartcamera" would help, a camera that you can make phone calls with. Or an MMD, a multi-media device - camera, computer, and phone. What’s in a name?

I'm puzzled how you inferred that.

Thankfully, my camera has never bothered me with spam calls and junk mail.😜

They’re treated like cameras because their cameras are cameras hidden inside an unfortunate monicker.

A smart phone is a multifunction device. It can be a lot of things. But when I said they are often treated as cameras I meant that the people who bought them consider the camera function to be very important. It's the reason why they bought it when their old ones were fine for them as a phone.
I haven't heard many people telling their friends that you sound so real with this new phone I get but rather they touted images taken by their new phones.

The smart pones have good cameras and are getting better but those of us that use the pictures for non on line photos need the pixels to print and we generally take a more serious approach to photography.

As I say while camera manufacturers are selling fewer cameras in recent years they are still selling a whole lot more cameras than they did in the 90's. So in my opinion we are still having way more cameras than we need.

The OP said cameras for the first group and phones for the other. I take issue with the implication that cameras within smartphones aren’t "real cameras". Also, the implication is that cameras in phones somehow produce lesser quality results than a stand alone camera. That’s nonsense.

I didn't perceive (infer) that implication,
just different for different requirements.

It is killing the snapshot, lightweight travel, and point and shoot markets I think. Landscape, wildlife, and more the ‘more than a snapshot user’ markets aren’t going to be affected as much…sensor size, low light noise capabilities, and lens reach are things that phone cameras will have a hard time matching…and lens reach for them is never going to be solved as that’s a physics problem.

It's all in what you do with your pictures in the quality of a phone print vs a camera. On line phones are fine a 13X19 is problem. I know of people who loved the phone pictures and then realized more about photography and went to cameras. We all started some place and went in deeper.

I read an article where a Sony RX-100 was put up against a Pixel 4 smartphone....and one other phone.

Both phones won every category over the RX-100...not even close.

4/3 sensor has been crushed by the phone industry...it exists still...sure...but everyone involved had very high hopes for a heck of a lot more market share...that never materialized...and won't ever.
Crop and FF are already falling to smartphones as well...depending on their tech lvl.

Only the top tier cameras can outshine phones today.

The sales show the domination and where the R&D is...phones.

I agree. We are comparing camera sales today to the digital camera sales explosion of 15 years ago. A saturated market today combined with mirrorless and dslrs. I doubt that we will ever see that volume of sales again unless the product is totally different and unique from what is marketed today.

I admit to using my phone quite a bit for snapshots. The phone is always in my shirt pocket and I don't always carry a camera when I go out. The last time I carried a camera it stayed in the car and I didn't use it....didn't use the phone either.
