Problem with editing software

My computer is a MacBook Pro with the new M-1 chip. It only has 8GB of RAM, and the RAM cannot be upgraded.

I have enjoyed using ON1 Photo Raw and upgraded a month ago to the 2023 version. The software has many good features, which have been made even better with the 2023 version.

Unfortunately the 2023 version of the software uses 7 GB of RAM, leaving me only 1GB when I have loaded the program and want to edit photos. The editing process is extremely slow.

I could purchase a new computer with 16 or 24 GB of RAM, but that would be a very expensive solution.

How much RAM does Lightroom use? If less, switching the Lightroom may be a possible solution.

Are there other good editing programs which require less RAM?

I appreciate everyone's thoughts.

Avoid another Apple product. An upgradable PC will offer you all you need for support of editing software.

I'm afraid that a switch from Apple to PC would require a very significant learning curve that this 75 year old man may not be up to. Just to transfer all of my files from Apple to PC would be a task I probably couldn't handle.

The lesson here is don't buy a computer with less than 16GB ram. 32 is even better.

The program uses 7GB of RAM??? The program is only 3GB...you surely mean Hard Drive space...

Have you cleaned (cleared cache and the like) your computers HD lately?

I thought the M1 and M2 chips utilized RAM differently than Intel chips, which is why the new M1 and M2 Macs come with less RAM than a PC might have. So a new Mac with 8GB RAM would perform like a PC with 16GB or 32GB RAM. Or so I've read.

Any M-1 Apple should be very speedy. Something else may be wrong besides memory.

That is correct - my M1 16 Pro is very fast and limited memory has never been an issue.

In my M1, 16Gb and I have LR/PS and Topaz programs running simultaneously without the slightest issues.

I ran a test of Topaz Sharpen using my i9 64Gb RAM PC and the M1. Same photo same process 25 seconds on the PC and 3 seconds on the M1.

Ok, you have 16. The original poster only had 8 so apples and oranges.

Perhaps but my initial question remains unanswered so perhaps there is still hope.

Apple changed the use of ram with the newM1 and you needs someone who understands that and can help you. I would ask Apple directly and you may have the service plan too.

An M1 with 8Gb is performance wise equivalent to 16Gb with the Intel chips. This comes about because of the architecture of the M1 and the way it uses the RAM

I know that's what the marketing says but I've seen side by side comparisons and that claim is not born out in the real world.
