Don't know if anyone else is aware of this but a newly restored steam engine crashed into a parked piece of equipment yesterday. Link to YouTube near bottom of article.

The good thing is it didn't damage the steam tubes, the engine was passing passenger cars when the accident happened. Had a steam explosion happened it could have been a major event.

The train was in the process of moving from one end to the other to pull back to terminal. The crew very well could have been distracted because they always wave to the passengers as they go past, I'm sure they're will be changes after this.

The accident happened in Paradise..Paradise Pa if anyone is courious about what paradise looks like.

WOW. That is too bad. It actually looked like it stopped fairly quickly though.

Now that was a major fault by whoever parked the backhoe.
At the Railway museum I belong to, we have someone leave things too close to the track every so often. One loco took out the sliding door to a car barn it was going back into after being brought out to be hosed down and washed. The door wasn't open far enough by about 1". A heavy wind moved it after the loco pulled out of the car barn and no one noticed. On another siding, the signals crew put up a new signal pole that turned out to be too close to the rails by only a few inches - but only for one of our locomotives, the others all fit past. The guys moving that loco realized it (going at walking speed) and stopped in time. The signals guys had to take down the signal, pour a new concrete pad and put it back up. Just in case, they moved it over almost 2 feet.

...

Interesting.
I thought it was the guy that left the switch in the wrong position.
But neither of us really know, do we. It's conjecture on our part.

I would think the switch should have been lined & locked by the maintenance of way personal, in addition a derail with red flag installed ahead of the excavator. Positive Track Protection is a FRA rule, when occupying the track that we had to adhere to on the UPRR.

The switch sent the loco into the back hoe, but why in blazes was a back hoe parked on the track?

So I guess it would be 50%/50% switch position and parking. I wonder what happened first, the parking or the switch?

And the engineer didn't look at the switch?
Maybe he did and simply could not stop in time.

We should wait for the final report before we pass judgement, eh?
