How many years ago was the Affirmative Action initiative passed? There was a 25 year sunset provision to expire written into that act. Do the math.

Good, discrimination should be eliminated whenever and wherever it occurs. Affirmative action is just l*****t speak for discrimination. Same with undocumented immigrant being l*****t for illegal/criminal alien. L*****ts falsely label bad things to fool people into accepting them. Evil.

I would love to see our liberal friends weigh in on the proper and acceptable use of "Uncle Tom".

Are you saying that you think affirmative action is constitutionally legal? Are you trying to claim it isn't r****t? If we are going to be a fair and non r****t society then race can not be used to determine anything, including admission to colleges and universities. It should be on merit and merit alone. Instead, in order to give B****s an advantage we discriminate against Asian Americans and W****s. Yeah, I'm sure that is perfectly legal.

SCOTUS should do exactly what it appears that they are going to do. Would you be OK with being one of the victims of affirmative action? I know people that have been victims of it. Totally unjust and unfair.

Saw a question asked on TV tonight, and I would love to hear you answer it.

How would you feel about affirmative action being applied to the NBA and NFL? You know quotas for white folk.

There would be other more obvious implications and I would love to hear jcboy's thoughts.

Affirmative action has no business being applied anywhere at any time under any circumstances. Discrimination should NEVER be condoned, even when it is democrat sponsored and approved, as affirmative action is.

My very thought yesterday. The fans would not be at all happy if a very talented black player was replaced by a mediocre white player because of affirmative action. At times people need to consider what if the shoe is on the other foot.

Your comments about quotas, etc. in AA suggests you don't understand it's purpose. This was copied from an HR textbook a very long time ago during my studies.

Affirmative action is about increasing opportunity, not about selecting people just because they have a certain background.

Sports at one time did have what we would call affirmative action policies. Black athletes were shut out of professional sports for no other reason than they were black, but that changed from the 1940s to the 1970s, as professional sports teams started integrating black players into their ranks. When teams started selecting for ability without consideration of race (which is affirmative action), the number of nonwhite players went up, and in the case of the NFL and NBA, through the roof.

Affirmative action in sports is not necessary because there are no artificial barriers to joining sports teams that disadvantage prospective players based on race. Let’s take a look at how the careers of most sports professionals usually go:

getting involved in pee-wee sports leagues as small children
playing on sports teams in high school
playing on sports teams in college
playing on a farm team in lieu of high school or college
recruitment by a professional team
None of these paths are closed off to anyone because of race. Anyone can play pee-wee sports. Here in the US, the vast majority, if not all, kids go to some kind of high school, and tryouts for teams are open tryouts, where the coaches look for some ability to play the game. Any kid attending that high school can go out for the team. Colleges recruit the best players they can find from the high schools and expend a lot of time and money to find them. “Best” is objectively measured by statistics like:

how fast the player can run
how high the player can jump
how fast the player can throw a baseball
performance stats like number of touchdowns, completed passes, home runs hit, bases stolen, earned run averages, points per game, etc.
So, in order for you to prove that the NBA needs affirmative action, you need to prove two things:

That there are artificial barriers for entry into the profession that disadvantages a group of people.
That the standards for acceptance are not germane to the sport
As far as I’m aware, no team in high school or college screens for anything other than ability to play when deciding who to put on their teams. There is no real incentive for doing otherwise—teams with players who are less than optimal don’t win, and coaches and schools want winning teams, particularly at the college level, where the revenue from a successful sports program is significant as well as the free publicity the school gets when it has a highly ranked sports team. Coaches who have losing teams get canned. Coaches who have winning teams get tons of money. Refusing to put your best player on the field because he’s Asian is stupid and no coach interested in a decent career is going to do that, even if he is a r****t. If there is a group, like Asians, that find themselves underrepresented, it would be because they either as a group aren’t interested in sports or they simply didn’t perform as well as other people that did make the team. It isn’t because of lack of opportunity—they can try out like other kids do.

As to the standards, how you do as a player is what is important. Coaches/recruiters use statistics from past game/match performances as well as actually observing the player during a game or match to determine if a player meets the standards they require. Body type is critical to how a player can perform. Generally for the NBA if you want to be a top player, you have to be tall to play well. For the NFL, being a big guy who is also fast is usually important. You won’t find any players who are average height in the NBA, and you won’t find a lot of small or slow guys playing for the NFL no matter the race.

Sports don’t need AA because they ALREADY run on the principles of fair employment-the best people, as evidenced by past performance, usually ends up with the job/spot on the team, and anyone can try to start a career in sports if they want to—the ports of entry are open to anyone who wants to try.
