NIGHT FOOTBALL PLAYOFF GAME CRANFORD V. WAYNE HILLS
LAST WEEKS INITIAL PLAYOFF GAME. PLEASE COMMENT/CRITIQUE. STILL DIFFICULT GETTING SHARP CRISP IMAGES.
D500 WITH 70-200 2.8 LENS. AUTO WB AND AUTO ISO, GROUP AUTOFOCUS MODE. GOT TO THE GAME LATER THAN I WANTED AND INADVERTENTLY FORGOT TO REVIEW MY SETTINGS. AFTER THE GAME ENDED I REALIZED I HAD THE APERTURE AT 5.6 EC +1. DAMN…CLEANED THEM UP AS BEST I COULD. I DO NOT HAVE DENOISE /SHARPEN. PAUL
It's hard enough shooting under less than ideal lighting and then you shoot yourself in the foot. I have been there myself. Try processing in B & W I'm still kicking myself for some of my mistakes over the years.

We've all done it one time or another. I know that doesn't make you feel any better, but you're not alone. Go ahead and let your auto ISO max out around 10,000. Then do post processing clean up. If you haven't already tried (have) Topaz DeNoise, take a look at it. You can download a fully functional version for 30 days. That will give you a chance to see if it meshes with your shots. Another possibility is Topaz Photo AI. It ads some of the sharpening algorithms to the mix as well. You will be surprised at what you can get out of a noisy and sometimes blurry shot with those products!

Paul, I can count on 3 hands the number of times I have started a game or inadvertently during the course of the game changed my camera settings (now i lock all the buttons). When i turn on my camera, i switch to 1 of 3 preprogrammed camera modes where i have my preferred sports settings to lock those in from whatever settings I previously had the camera set to. I have maybe 0 screw ups this season! Good captures even though your f5.6 brought everything in focus. I bought the entire suite of Topaz products when they had a sale not to long ago, it has salvaged a few of my captures.
Rick
Paul,
the good news is Cranford won, so you get another shot this Friday night. Have fun!
Love the photos. Rooting for Cranford. My son was a tackle for Cranford.
Thanks all ! Yes I do get another “shot” Friday. Paul
Great images … especially how effectively you’ve reduced the noise in these low light conditions (assume in post processing). I use similar equipment & settings on my poor light night HS football endeavors as you … 5DMk4, 70-200, F2.8, 1/800 sec, small focus zones, back button focus … but try to limit ISO to 6400 … and post process in Lightroom.
Photograph’s subjective … no right or wrong. I try to post process as follows to get a more moody (cinematic?) effect by toning down the whites slider, adding contrast, clarity and sharpening to the players, and then toning down the exposure, shadows, clarity and focus to the background (which helps reduce noise) … to “separate” the players from the background and add a 3D effect.
A few examples attached … again no right or wrong … just personal preference,
Great shots Gampa. I’m going to try your post processing suggestions. Do you have Denoise/ Sharpen ? Paul
Nope … neither. I just use noise reduction in Lightroom (subscription version). It’s got very and effective AI to select the objects and/or people from the background … rather than having to brush a mask over them separately.
