Today, my wife and I will be experiencing our 54th Halloween together. In the previous 53 Halloweens we have never had rain. Tonight appears to continue the trend, as rain is predicted later in the evening after Trick or Treat time has ended. The interesting thing to me about this is the region where we live - 30 miles from the Atlantic Ocean in Maryland. Definitely not an arid location. Although my wife and I never had children, she always enjoyed admiring the costumes. That allowed me to enjoy my before dinner martini. However, she now has dementia and is not capable of greeting the Trick or Treaters. Not wanting to be thought of as an old Scrooge, I will attempt to continue the tradition. I am not against Halloween celebrations, but given our cultural changes my opinion is the celebration would be better served to be held at schools ,churches, or various community centers.
Musing over🥸
You might consider just turning out the porch lights and most of the interior lights and just quietly close down the tradition of Trick or Treat at your home. We did here years ago. Sorry to learn of your wife's dementia. Your future will determine your love for her.
Our 54th Halloween together as well. We've lived in 5 different states over the years and have experienced everything from heat to snow and ice. Thankfully, we are both in relative good health, just not as spry as we used to be. Our (younger) neighbors offer their driveway for the neighbors to get together, bring a pot luck and have a table set up for all of us to bring our candy and the neighborhood kids take from that table and go on the next block. The last few years we've opted out but the tradition continues. We just stay at home and doe what St. Mary's suggested, turn down the lights and don't answer the door. Good luck.
This was our 52nd Halloween together and had a bowl of candy at the ready. Fortunately, only two groups of three T&Ters showed up so we’ll split what’s left between
us. We’ve found that miniature Kit-Kats and plain Hershey’s go equally well with red or white wine.😊

We have a full bag each of Reese's cups and snicker bars. Any wine suggestions to go with these?
