White Pocket is a VERY remote place. You sort of have to know how to get there, but they have put up some signs. In order to get there, one must drive that loneliest stretches of road - the 89A to a house and turn north; then drive to an old corral and turn east. After awhile there begins to be signs when the road forks. The road is deep sand the further in one goes, requiring both 4WD and high clearance. The flat is a big area and one can camp anywhere. But then, one must hike through deep sand a long ways, then maneuver the most uneven hard rock, up and down, and around. But once there, one doesn't want to leave. Anywhere one points the camera, there's a photo in the making.

A pocket is a natural indentation in the earth that collects water. The crust of this one is very white "brain" rocks (so-called because they look like brains). Underneath the crust is rich, rust-coloured swirls, lines, and indentations that create the most amazing patterns. Light and shadow and only part of the equation.

Thanks, Mike. It is a festival of colour - good term! There are so many shots, and I only took about 4000 on the entire trip. The reflections are a real plus. One must be there at the right time with the right light, but they are good. That's why I did a photo tour - they know these things!

I'm already wondering how many to print - and will anyone want to buy them. I do like doing abstract photography, and this is certainly that. Thanks!
