Angel Of The Morning

The setting is an early morning shot of Rydal Water in the Lake District (UK), almost unchanged. The cave is actually above Rydal Water and has been manipulated. It's known for it's 'sharks's mouth' look. The angel is Kristine, whom you may have seen previously in my composites and the wings are from a deceased sea bird. Your critique is welcome if you have the time. I did send a slightly different version a day or two back but it's lost in the ether, somewhere between here and the States!

The light, the angel and the mist are beautiful. I'm having trouble putting together the jagged cave roof with the soft elegance of the subject. Would you talk about your purpose, Dave? Many thanks!

The version that failed to reach you was the one for you then Linda, it had no cave! The cave is simply a method of drawing attention to the subject and is not uncommon in art. It may be seen as a contrast of form or it may be similar to a vignette but with more interest! It may be ‘Marmite’ (do you have that in the States? - it’s a beef extract that one is said to either love or hate). If I could only recall the artist’s name (that’s an age thing!) I would quote a painting where the subject is shown between two huge rocks. Apparently it was a technique he used often. At least with Ps we can switch it off at will! Thanks for your usual thoughtful critique, I think there may be others that will think much the same.

The dark edging is certainly a contrast to the light of the angel. Each time I opened this image though, my eyes went right for the light of the angel. Maybe meant as a contrast between light/dark, heaven/hell. Regardless, I did enjoy this image. Bev

I have tried Marmite and hate it even more than I hate poi (a Polynesian food paste)

When I scroll down to where the top part is not in the image, the remaining rocks on left and right make a nice natural frame; I guess it's just the jagged-edged top, accompanied a bit of claustrophobic feeling that I'm having trouble with.

Very appreciative of your time and expertise in art history!

That’s a good interpretation of the contrasting form and light Bev. Pleased you enjoyed the image, thanks for your comment.

I’m with you all the way Linda - Marmite -yuk! Caving - Noooooo! This cave isn’t so bad, the mouth is wide and the ceiling high, and one can just stroll in (or at least, hop across a few stepping stones, the front is usually flooded). It’s one of two Lake District caves that I’ve visited, both popular with photographers - I’ve possibly posted a shot of the other, Cathedral Cavern, on UHH at some time.

I agree with others that the cave mouth provides contrast to the subject - a vignette with bite, you might say (where's a cringe emoji when you need it ).

Being from Dorset you're probably going to ask Linda if she's referring to apple poi or mince poi .

Beautifully done. I like the vignetting with the cave.

That’s a good description for the vignette RG.
I’m not actually ‘from’ Dorset, just living ‘in’. I’ve heard of Dorset apple cake - in fact every tea shop around here sells the stuff - but poi is totally new to me. Must say the Hawaiian version doesn’t look too appetising on Google!

Thank you Joe, it does look like the cave can stay!
