We used to have over a hundred kids come to our house on Halloween. Now, it's down to under twenty. Still, I feel obliged to buy lots of candy, just in case. I make sure to buy candy that I like just in case not enough kids show up. Last week, I bought two bags of Snickers. One bag is half gone already. They make good snacks while watching TV. I'll have to buy some more, I guess.

People who are at home should leave their lights on. Most of them were probably kids who went trick-or-treating.

Are they the "fun size" candy bars?
Al Roker says "there's NOTHING fun about "fun size" candy bars.

When I was in college, I would buy two bags full of candy, get lone ranger style mask (2), and my date and I would follow a large group of Trick-or-treaters. After they leave the door, I would come up and knock on the door. Door opens with the hosts looking at our knee-caps before moving upwards to meet my eyes (6' 2" height). My date and I would present our bags with a smiling "Trick or Treat". After a moment of shocked silence, I tell them that my friend and I got to feeling guilty for all the past years, we decided to return the candies. Got a lot of laughs as they took a couple of the candy bars. One elderly woman invited us in to have some coffee and home made German cakes/tortes. It was like stepping into old Germany when we entered her house. This will always remain in my memory. (And no, it was not a la Hansel und Gretel.)

We stopped giving out candies decades ago, instead we buy small toys (think carnival prizes) and matchbox cars and give those out. For really little kids we go find some child-safe books for them.

And the kids are always excited to get them. We usually range anywhere from 30 to 50 visitors on Halloween.

Apparently I was the only one on our block that gave out full sized candy bars. I’ve run into the same kids as adults 30 years later, and at least half the time they say something like: β€œ I remember. You were the house with full sized candy bars at Halloween”. Lots of cred (and no tricks) for not very much money

I used to live in Dubuque, IA. We had loads of Trick or Treaters. I counted them one year. We had 380. When we moved to a smaller town, not knowing how many would come to the door, we prepared for around 250 kids knocking at the door. We had around 50. Towards the end of the evening, the few kids coming got a handful of candy.

Our Holloween masses have dwindled so badly over the years that I just buy maybe 8-12 candy bars and stand in my living window eating them while the kids ring the door bell.
