For years, my contract with my ISP guaranteed 70 mbps minimum download speed. I didn't think much about it since it always measured about 83 mbps. My old router died, so I replaced it with a modern Netgear unit. I expected a modest increase; however, I was surprised when it measured 850-950 mbps without changing the plan with the ISP. I think that I will keep the Netgear.

Big improvement! It's likely you've had that download speed for at least a while from your ISP but couldn't access it with your router (the proverbial weak link) -- it could well have been available with a direct connection to your modem. For my desktop PC direct connected to my modem I get better than giga-bit download speeds but add in my router and spread through the house, my individual connected devices can show 15-30% degradation of speed. You made a good investment to access the service you've probably been paying for!!

The ISP just announced that improvements will be coming. Last month, the minimum of 70 mbps was still being quoted in my bill. Today's bill no longer has that statement. I think that I am an unwitting beta tester. I will not complain about it.
