I'm looking for programs to keep track of CDs and DVDs. The word "FREE" appears on the page for just about all of them, but they are not free. In most cases, they don't make the price easy to find. Somewhere, there might be a small "free to download." I don't like downloading and installing programs that I'll be deleting when I find that I don't like them. Bit and pieces always remain after uninstalling something.

Have you ever seen a program that charged you to download it?

For example: https://download.cnet.com/All-My-Movies/3000-2131_4-10256947.html

Hahaha - no. "Free Download" is a come-on...

I guess they could make the program "free", but charge you $xx to download it.
People love the word "free".

Why not just use Excel or an equivalent? I do.
I quit building explicit databases for things years ago.

I downloaded and installed Ant Movie Catalog, the program the reviewer likes best. These programs go to the Web and add more info about the movies, something that Excel isn't going to do.

Something I can probably find on IMDB.com on an as desired basis.

There ain't no setch thang as free. I never look at anything labeled "free". I remember starting to download a photo editing program once that was labeled free and then the fee appeared. I stopped right there and backed out.

My Dad always said “there is no FREE Lunch!!” When I was a child, I didn’t understand. As time passed, I saw the hidden meaning in all of this. Advertising has become more deceptive over the years. The ads will print “7 day trial” or something to that effect. But there allowing you to download a program and later in the download process they ask for credit card data. I believe the appropriate phase here is, “Caveat Emptor.” This means, Buyer Beware. In short, someone worked hard to create a computer program and they want to get paid.

Now I’m not one to throw your hopes into a garbage heap. There are programs that are listed as “trialware”. This means you can try the program and if you like it, the programmer will hope that you pay a nominal fee. This is a lot better. This is a process for starting programmers who want others to try their product.

Just remember, you are not buying a computer program. You are buying the license to use it. The program is always property of the designer.

It’s a funny world we live in!

I set up my own Music CD and Movie DVD/Blu-ray/VHS databases using Microsoft Access. Access is part of the higher end versions of MS-Office. Not free of course. And a lot of work to use (Access). One might also be able to do similar with a word processor or spreadsheet. But I suspect that you not only want something free but something ready to go out of the box. In my world - dream on.

I used to use a program called DVD Profiler. If I still have it, I might use that.

One time I mentioned to my oldest son, this time honored phrase. He responded, “sure Dad there is plenty to go around.” I inquired by what he meant. He said, “Go running along a Highway with your mouth open. You’ll get plenty of bugs but I don’t like the creamy ones. You’ll also find some nice dear, raccoons and don’t forget skunks! Yummy road kill!!”

That was the last time I tried to teach my son rudimentary economics!!

With all due respect Jerry,
Your mistake was looking for something on your computer. That can lead people down the wrong path. People end up buying stuff they didn’t have, don’t need and will get them into trouble someday.
