Ran across this while reviewing old photos. Things get serious when you hike in the Arizona desert.
Twenty years of hiking the Arizona desert I have never "stumbled on" or been surprised by a Rattle Snake. They are relatively easy to find if you are looking for them.
Generally speaking, it takes three people to get bit by a rattlesnake. First person sez: 'oh, hey, lookie there, a rattlesnake! Second person sez: "oh wow, nifty, lookit there, it's got a hissy tongue, some rilly nice scaly patterns, and them rattles are rattlin' like crazy!! Third person doesn't say anything right off, picks it up, then sez 'wonder if it'll bite me?'
The Midget Fadeds in my neck of the woods will do whatever they can to get away from you. Diamondbacks and their kin south and east (and north and west, I 'spect) of where I live give you more warning than you deserve. The Mojave Greens out in the Mojave like to leap out at you from nowhere and want to make you dead.
Can't count the number of rattlers I've seen.
De-leeted due to excessive and gratituous rattlin'.........

been my experience that the mojave's are just plain ill tempered
Yep..it gets serious some times out here in Montana as well...lol..we still went on the hike and never did see either one.
Back in the day when I was doing the environmental thing...
If we had to walk through a field of Palmetto...we'd flip a coin for who went first.
You didn't want to be the second guy.
That would not be my playground!
If only people obeyed signs. : )

This one was under our garbage can one morning when we lived in Green Valley. I believe it’s a Mojave that had just dined on one of the rabbits in our yard - he pretty much ignored me taking the picture.

At Pine Creek Gorge, aka “Grand Canyon of PA”, signs say, “Rattle snakes have been spotted in this area; rattle snakes are an endangered species; DO NOT HARASS THE RATTLE SNAKES!”
I remember seeing similar signs in the Badlands of SD.
