most of the shots have a dark distortion on or near the edges
at first I thought the lens cap was in the way????????

1 what causes it..I heard something about hot spots?
2 does the L model have the same problem?
using eos "R" and "RP"

Thanks

A lot of wide lenses have a small amount of vignetting at the edges. It's easily fixed in post, but yes, even the L series will have a tiny bit.

Are you shooting raw and if so, what are you using to convert them? Just opening raw files in a photo viewer can result in the image being shown without any corrections such as lens corrections.

I shoot raw.
also I just realized that what I am seeing is the hood at 24 mm when i zoom out it goes away!

at 105 mm i do not see it
And I am seeing it in the viewer and on the finished image i use dpp and lr

But My initial thought " the Hood" is what I see at 24mm..maybe I am using the wrong "hood"

Sounds like a wrong hood.

I just realized that what I am seeing is.. the hood at 24 mm when i zoom out it goes away!

at 50 mm to 105 mm i do not see it

My initial thought " the Hood" is what I see at 24mm..maybe I am using the wrong "hood"

Are you also not using the lens profile, or maybe the wrong profile?

i can see the hood on the flip screen while i am shooting at 24 mm

I don't have to shoot..I see it until i zoom out to about 45mm

Try taking the hood off and shooting pics. Does the vignetting still happen? I noticed that also on my R5 and R6. It always is repaired with lens correction in Photoshop

Might it be that you have installed the hood improperly?
It just might be installed 90 degrees from where it should be installed. If the hood is symetrical then this is not a problem.

The proper Canon hood for that lens is the EW 73D.

If u have everything correctly set, there should be NO dark distortions near the edges. When I have more than one filter attached to mine then I do get some. But otherwise there should be none.
