In my case the client wants unprocessed jpegs. I'm glad your camera can do that!

I guess if you were handing them off straight from your card, that makes sense. But you could crop a 33 or 45mp jpeg too and not do any “real” processing. Either way you end up with same result. I’m just saying you don’t have to do it in camera to get there.

I have owned the sony a6000, a6500, a7s, a7ii, a7iii, a7Riii, a7Riv, A9, RX10iii, RX10iv,and RX100v. The A1 would be my 1st choice for sports. It has the fastest focus of the Sony line. The A1 has 50mp vs the a7Riv at 60mp. The a9 and a9ii both have 24mp. The a9 and a9ii focus is blazing fast compared to the a7Riv. The A1 is even faster and twice the MP so you can crop even more. I often switch between Full Frame and APS-c mode to get the "extra reach" I really love the speed of the A9. I like the A9 so much that I have considered selling all my other stable of cameras in order to buy the A1. Go for the A1 and you won't be disappointed. The a9 and a9ii are great second choices. All three have eye fallow and the A1 also has eye fallow for birds.

I think I'm going to take the mirrorless plunge. I've kinda decided on Sony, just looking for model recommendations. Besides everyday photography, mostly shoot wildlife and sports. While price will be a final consideration, I don't want recommendations based on price, please. Ready, set, GO!

Sony and Canon make excellent mirrorless products for sports photography. The Sony a9 was the first best sports mirrorless camera. You can pick up one of these used at a good price point. Marriage this body with either a Sony 100-400 or 200-600 and your ready for Sports Illistrated.

Terry, looking back on your original query. If price isn't going to be a factor in our recommendations, then yes go for the A1 and call it a day, period.

It is truly Sony's flagship and pretty much does it all, brilliantly. And Sony even added medium and small raw files choices with an A1 firmware update ( I am sure all the news agencies around the globe that went to Sony asked for that).

I have used the best from Nikon, Canon, Leica, Hasselblad, Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Mamiya, Bronica, Plaubel, Dierdorf and more, and IMHO the Sony A1 is the best overall camera I have ever photographed with. Bar none.

No camera is perfect, but the A1 comes pretty close.

My final recommendation for what you are asking for, in order of preference, price no object.

1) A1 (still a top seller new, but there may be some used ones around, do some checking)
2) A9/A9II (used or new)
3) A7IV, A7RIV
4) A7C

Cheers and best to you. Let us know what you decide.

I will leave you with this tranquil A1 shot of sunrise over Brookings Lake, Manistee National Forest, Michigan, USA. A1, Sony 24-105mm f4 G OSS lens

One of the advantages of using the Sony system is the availability of a large range of third-party lenses. Some of them are outstanding. Sigma and Tamron make long zooms (400mm or longer) that are very good and that are very useful for sports. The image quality of the native Sony lenses (100-400 GM and 200-600mm G) may be a shade better, but they are also twice the money. I own the Sony 100-400mm GM for wildlife and landscape photography, but I think I would have gotten a Sigma or Tamron lens for sports.

gwilliams6 also pointed to the Clear Image Zoom, a great feature in Sony mirrorless cameras. I have used CIZ successfully in many contexts, most notably wildlife in Kenya. I managed to extend my 100-400 GM de facto to 800mm and got amazing wildlife shots.
