Information about Photographing in Palo Dura Canyon, Texas in October

I am planning a trip to Palo Dura Canyon in about 10 days time and was wondering if anyone had some guidance about:

1. Whether two days is sufficient to scout and capture the essence of the landscape in the canyon or whether it would be better to spend three days there?
2: Specific areas of the canyon that are more iconic or interesting and that is where I should spend my time and,
3. Knowing that the golden light is generally more favorable to shoot in (early morning and late afternoon), are there any recommendations you can provide for specific locations in these hours.

Thank you for your time in replying.

My wife and I lived in Amarillo for 14 years but left five years ago. Two days is more than enough for Palo Duro Canyon. The most iconic trail there is known as the Lighthouse Trail, which is considered a moderate hike. Lucky for you that the canyon is a state park and has a website with plenty of information.

Also you should check out the Photo Pills app for predicting where the light will fall on what times & from what direction. Great for sun/moon/milkyway photos.
Here is a link to some Photo Pill tutorials.

David,

We recently spent two days there in our little Casita, and departed feeling like we would have enjoyed another day or two.

Don't overlook Caprock Canyons State Park. It's only a short distance from Palo Duro.

Looking at both those on Google Earth, I think they are closely connected.

Watch for rattlesnakes. Not everywhere, but, that is rattlesnake country. Will be warming themselves on sun exposed rocks on cool mornings.

I would recommend shooting the Lighthouse formation but it is a 5 mile round trip walk plus climbing up the rock for the best view. This time of the year the weather should be nice, I seem only to go there in Jun when the temperature reaches triple digits.

Unless you camp in the park, they do not open the gates until exactly 8am. double check to be sure now. We had to wait about an hour one morning -so much for sunrises in the Canyon. Lighthouse is the top hike. IMHO 2 days would be sufficient Caprock has no hotels etc near-about 45 miles.
