Shot with Nikon D5. Lens: Tamron 150-600mm G2 Zoom at 600mm. 1/2500th at F/11 ISO 800. Denoised with Topaz. Tried various f stops and ISO ranges. This was the best of the shots. I used both lightroom and photoshop to create the best balance of brightness and contrast.
I'm thinking of acquiring a nikkor 200-500mm sometime soon. I've heard that what is lost in magnification is more than made up in clarity. Other hoggers' thoughts?

This one was shot with the Nikon 200-500 a few minutes ago with a D5300. I sold my 150-600 Sigma (about the same as the Tamron G2 in sharpness), and have enjoyed this lens quite a lot. I usually shoot it on a D750 or D850 but I had the little camera sitting close by and just threw it on the lens. This was hand-held 1/640 at f13, ISO 200.

Nice image. Is this straight out of the camera or after some post?

Just ran it through Paintshop Pro and the auto-correct feature. I didn't use unsharp mask or do much to it.

This is straight out of the camera: It needs a little brightening and contrast to look pretty good. I cropped it to about 1/2 the original frame. If I had used a FF camera it would have had to be cropped even more since with the D5300 I was shooting at an equivalent 750mm. It is a toss-up whether to go with FF and crop more or go with a crop sensor and crop less. Tonight is the full moon and I will shoot it with a D850 and compare.

OK, I said I would use the D850 and shoot it again tonight. Here is what I got: #1 is straight out of the camera and #2 is with a little sharpening in Corel. I had to crop in quite a bit more since I was shooting at 500mm rather than at 750mm. The shots: #1 - 160th /f4/ISO 800 #2 - 400th/f18/ISO 800 I thought these were no better than the ones shot on the D5300, then I went into EXIF and was surprised that I had left the camera in low res. JPEG. I was shooting something to post on the wire and didn't need 45 mb files. These are only about 2800 pix. on the long side!
So my comparison is a bust for tonight and I'm not heading back out. If the sky is clear tomorrow night I will try again!
