A ritual of new life. A female Monarch laying eggs on a milkweed plant growing in a pot in my yard.
A few years ago I was collecting the caterpillars and growing them to release in an old bird cage, but lately I have just been letting Nature take its course.
Canon 80D, 100-400L mk2+1.4x III @ 560, 1/800 @ f/8.0, ISO-1250
3/31/22 at 11:58 AM on a cloudy-bright day. I was trying for one in flight but ended up with egg laying. I got 21 frames of the egg laying and picked this one.
Itβs good leave it alone

Good idea!!Mother Nature does a better job taking care of her own
Robert, I too have been letting nature take its course. I encopurage milkweed plants to grow wherever they sprout and they eventually provide seeds for the next random crop. The Monarchs find them wherever they grow. The only aid I give is sometimes moving caterpillars to fresh plant that has already been stripped bare.

Got it, besides my inner "Olympic class lazy" approves of letting nature take care of it.

I just found out that as of last year, California requires a license to grow caterpillars. I better check and see if my permits to breath and have birthdays are up-to-date. In the meantime, I hereby declare today is not my 77th Birthday, it is the 76th Anniversary of my 1st Birthday.

California now requires a license to grow or even help the cats etc. of butterflies.
