R5 Auto ISO Issue

I keep having problems with my R5 where the camera will jump to auto ISO from manual mode without my input. This is extremely annoying when shooting flash in dark rooms at weddings. The camera will go from 1600 to say 6400 and overexpose my manual flash. I had the same problem with 2 R6 units before returning them within 30 days through Adorama. I’m wondering if this issue could be related to using off-brand batteries, or to using a Flashpoint/Godex flash unit. Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon? Any ideas on what could be causing this would be greatly appreciated.

Searched and found this video. It may help you with the ISO issue.

I have not had this issue on the R5. I use Godox/Flashpoint flash units. No 3rd party batteries. Do you use Custom setting C1 C2 or C3? If you do, this can and will change your settings. There is an article on the Canon website, myself and many others complained about the implementation of C1

If the camera goes into sleep mode (there is no real sleep mode it turns off by itself, but not really, touching a button brings it back like sleep mode) if you have made any changes, it will change it back even though you don't want it to.

This is a bad design, many people have complained about it but Canon said they are not going to fix it.

If you are not useing custom settings. I have no clue what it would do thsi

I suggest making sure you are in manual mode.

I'm not using custom settings. This issue occurs in the middle of continuous shooting. I'll take several shots in a row and then notice extreme overexposure. I check to find auto ISO has kicked in. This happens occasionally on all 4 R cameras I've owned. (2 R5, 2 R6). I'll be trying to use my Canon batteries as often as possible to see if it stops happening. I'm just hoping someone out there has the same issue. There's nothing I can see I'm doing to cause this.

Did you remap any buttons or swiches to auto ISO and you hit the button or it is a dirty knob that bumps forward? Is your rear display coming on and your nose makes the change? Could this be lens related? Are you using an EF RF adapter that has a ring mapped to auto ISO?

From a post of someone having the same issue..

There is an option in the menus to revert to auto ISO after the metering timer expires. Maybe that got enabled somehow.

I found it on the C.Fn1 (orange) menu on my R6, labeled "Speed from metering/ISO Auto". I'm not sure that exactly explains what you're experiencing, but it's the closest I can think of.

Update: Maybe this helps someone in the future reading this. I found that the problem was not with the camera at all. It was the flash trigger. (The transmitter) I was using a Viper TTL System. I emailed them and told them of the problem. They checked it and found that there was a glitch. A few weeks later they emailed me (as promised) and sent me a link to update the firmware. ISO is staying at 100 now. Thanks for help everyone. It is much appreciated :-)

Thanks for the help and the research. I’m using a Flashpoint TTL flash in manual mode. I have the same flash without TTL. I’ll try that as well as disabling “speed from metering/ISO”. I also disabled “saftey switch” although both of these setting involve changes while in Auto ISO mode as I see it. They don’t seem to explain why auto iso would engage without manually setting it in the first place.

That’s just down to the user just not understanding how their camera works. If you go to the menu tab for registering your settings to C1-C3 it quite clearly gives you the option to either save the any changes you make to your custom setting or not. You have the choice, you can select enable or not. If you select enable it will automatically update any changes you make and be there the next time you use your camera, don’t turn on enable and your settings will revert to those previously saved when you turn the camera off.

You don't use this feature otherwise you would understand the complaint many people are having, it is a bad design and does not work how other cameras work.

Maybe this will help. In other cameras, you set up custom functions. If you select them, you can make changes all day and the are retained even when the camera goes to sleep, this is how it works until you turn the camera off. Then when you turn the camera back on, the settings are put back to C1.

The R5 the default sleep timer is 5 mins. If the camera goes to sleep it resets your settings, this should never happen and it is very frustrating because no camera should change your settings unless it is turned off.

You can disable sleep mode, but then the R5 gets poor battery life. This is purely a bad design that no other cameras I have seen have this problem.
