An auction house has offered $2 million for the Judge 62nd home run ball.

The guy who caught the ball hasn't responded yet.

There is a narrow "alleyway" between the wall and the stands and just before the ball got to the stands a fan can be seen jumping from the stands into the alleyway. Apparently he felt the ball might not make the stands and end up in the alleyway where he would be ready to grab it if he didn't break his neck. He was grabbed by Security and escorted from the stadium. The $2 million offer almost makes it seem worth the jump.

I get that it's worth big bucks, but wouldn't it be nice if the guy who caught 62 would give it to Judge. Trade for some merch, a couple sigs maybe?

Back in '61 the guy who caught Maris' 61st home run offered to give it back to Maris who told the guy to keep it and perhaps the money he could get for it would mean more to him.

I believe the guy got $5000 for it and used it for a down payment on a house.

I take it that the ball is marked in some way beforehand?

Yep...each time Judge came to the plate the ball boy would bring the ump several specially marked balls.

Right! And then Judge could sell it. I'm sure that on his meager sportsman's salary, he could use the money.

As far as I'm concerned, Babe Ruth is the home run king.

Have to disagree with you there, Jerry. Babe Ruth usually faced the same pitcher the whole game. Today, Judge might see three or four different pitchers in a game, many who throw at high velocity. Babe Ruth also played exclusively day games.

Really? Give up $2 Million for a couple of signatures and maybe a hat or two. Get real.

If he gives it to Judge the income tax on it would be 16% of 5 Million. If he keeps it the tax may be as high as 38%. If he sells it then he has capital gains tax to pay. If he gives it back to the team there will be no tax on it.
The trouble of catching a ball is hardly worth it.

I took a group of kids to the Rangers original stadium in Arlington, which used to be an old minor league stadium. Best place to see a major league game!!! Anyway, in left field, it had the same kind of "alleyway." We were in the bleachers and were there for batting practice. A couple of balls were in the alleyway just in front us. I couldn't resist. I jumped down, had both in my hands, but couldn't get back up. A couple of ushers helped me up but took the balls. I should have thrown them up to the kids. Didn't get kicked out.

Well, then he would have to share the crown with Judge as he tied Ruth in 147 games 7 games fewer than Ruth played in 1927.

Ruth hit his 60th in the final game of the season...or game number 154...7 more than it took Judge to tie him.

Please enlighten me. Why would he have tp pay 16% of $5 Million if he gave the ball to Judge? Why would he have to pay as much as 38% in tax if he decides to keep it?

There was a news article about this. If he gives the ball to Judge, there would be no income tax.
