The M1 processor is the same that goes into the iMac and Macbooks. Only the physical (ie cooling) changes the performance slightly.

I'm an IT guy so I know the debate and debated my daughters over this. LOL

And you're right, 16gb of RAM or nothing. PC or Apple.

Hi,
I have been a long time Apple user and have had 2 Mac minis. They are a great investment. I had my first one for 9 years and the second is still going after 12 years. I only use it for minor web surfing when I'm in my shop and I have replaced it with a desktop model and just recently a Mac book Pro.
Yes you have to buy everything separately but you get the advantage of having every peripheral that suits your needs.
Not trying to get anyone in an uproar but "Once you go Mac you never look back" Enjoy your purchase.

I'm thinking of purchasing one of these. I've done some research and realize I'll have to purchase all the peripherals, but still have a decent set up.

This will be my first Apple product. I'm not here to stir up the Windows vs Apple debate.

Does anyone use these and what is your experience? Good and bad, let's hear it!

Thanks in advance

There are TONS of great YouTube reviews of the M1 Mac mini. Start with MaxTech, https://www.youtube.com/c/MaxTechOfficial/search?query=mac%20mini

Luke Miani, Everyday Dad, Mark Ellis Reviews, are but a few of the trustable review sites. MANY others will pop up if you watch the one I linked.

My advice?

> Buy from Apple Refurbished. Same machine, same warranty as new, for about 15% less.

> Get all 8 graphics cores if you can find a refurb with that configuration.

> Check out OWC at https://eshop.macsales.com for peripherals like drives, docks, cables, and hubs. Also consider this:

https://www.charjenpro.com/products/ultimatedock — I use one and love it. It just works.

I have an M1 MacBook Air with 16GB and 1TB and all 8 graphics cores. It's great. After 13 months, I couldn't be happier.

The M1 Mini, M1 Air, M1 13" Pro, and 24" iMac are pretty similar in performance. Pick your form factor and boogie on...

M2 models will probably be here "soon," or so everyone says... But if you need one now, M1 machines are still awesome.

Does the Mini have the same performance specs of the iMac or other Mac devices?

Yes, the M1 Mini, M1 Air, M1 13” Pro, and 24” M1 iMac, configured similarly, perform similarly. The Air throttles a tiny bit after running full tilt for ten minutes or so, but that can be fixed by adding heat sink pads. (I haven’t needed to do that.)

The Mini is the best performer of the four mentioned, followed by the midrange iMac with two fans.

I recently bought, back in August, a Mac M1 mini with 512 Gb hard drive and 16 Gb memory. I've owned many Mac computers, they all still work just fine but like everything else with computers and technology they can no longer be updated with the latest OS which subsequently limits their use on the internet.

But, back to your inquiry, since I have already own a couple of displays (I always use 2 displays side by side) and Apple keyboards I was able to get up and running in a matter of, at the most 15 minutes, if not less.

I also purchased a Satechi dock with an additional 1 Terabyte Samsung EVO Plus SSD that mounts in the dock (make sure you order the correct one if you should go that route). The Mac mini sits on top of the Satechi dock (no heating issues whatsoever...there have been some reviews where people are experiencing heating issues).

The Mac M1 mini handles all my photo editing needs (and everything else) nicely. I'm using Photoshop and Lightroom. Quite often, since I use two displays, I have two applications running simultaneously without any performance issues that I can see.

I don't think I could have bought a comparable Mac product for what I paid compared to what I was able to put together with what I already have. For me, it's a great system.

NJ Guy, This post cover all you ask about. I have had a similar set for about 2 years and this is the best computer set I've used.

What Apple did with M1, etc., is an extension of the iPhone/iPad whole systems on chips. It features ARM-based RISC processing, with super low Wattage processing due to 5 nanometer layers. One SOC contains many different processors (some efficiency cores, some performance cores, some Neural Engine cores, some graphics processing cores, and many other processors. The memory is shared among ALL cores, so data needed by multiple cores does not have to be copied all over the logic board. It’s accessed in place. The whole logic board is densely packed, so data doesn’t travel far. It’s remarkably quick.

I'm a long time Mac user that ran a Mac Pro 2009 until 2022 with every upgrade possible. I recently upgraded to the basic Mac Mini M1 because it's a bargain IMO. This Mac handles my 16 bitt 42mp images with blistering speed. My son was so impressed that he purchased the same basic model to edit videos. I cannot recommend it enough but make sure you also buy a dock that accepts an extra SSD and SD card reader.

No uproar but this statement is just not true. You can see this all over the internet.
I'm Done with Mac After 30 Years. Here's Why I Switched to PC
https://youtu.be/czocopsGIrw

Lets look at logic and reason. If mac was the best, it would own the market. In the 24 years I have been in the computer industry mac has always been only 10 to 15 percent market share. If the mac was so much better it would have the huge marketshare PC has.

Why does it not dominate the market? Mac is overpriced, double the price of PC in laptops. Again evidence, because if mac was better in 24 years it would have a higher market share. Next reason, mac is not upgradable, (the reason many higher end people switch like the guy in the video). Next, you can't play games on a mac. There is a sizable number of people who play games like Call of Duty or top tier games, the don't run on a mac.

I use to thing the Mac OS was better in the past, but I figured it out the biggest problem windows has is virus. Mac does not have this problem because they have so little market share it is not even on the radar of most virus creators. If you remove virus as a windows issue windows and mac have similar problems software wise.
But I digress.

Your statement it just true.

Yet AMD and Intel are faster processors and faster performers in benchmark tests and real world workloads. (This was not true when the M1 first came out.

Don't get me wrong. M1 is a great win for Apple. It has finally brought them into the world of computing but they are still overpriced and still in 24 years have 10 to 15 percent market share.

No one buys a Mac for the price or the repairability or the usual things Windows users buy computers for. We buy them for three things: OS, security/privacy, and ecosystem (Mac, iPad, iPod, iPhone, iCloud, Watch...). The tight integration through the iCloud servers makes it irresistible.

Show me a $1400 Windows laptop that weighs under three pounds and can outrun a $1400 Mac laptop — completely silently — for ten hours, on battery alone. Oh wait, there isn't one!

I've never understood the market share "me too" thing, either. It doesn't keep me using Canons, for instance. I don't care much about market share. Apple is, off and on, the most profitable company in the world, for a reason. They make things people want to use. Plenty of companies do that, and plenty more don't do that. I'm happy with my computers, or I don't use them. I don't use Windows much any more, but when I do, it runs on my old Intel iMac just fine. I was once happy with a couple of the PCs I had at work. They weren't super fast (corporate boxes seldom are, due to all sorts of constraints), but they ran software I needed. Eventually I virtualized Windows and ran it on my MacBook Pro.

Really, Intel and AMD can win all the benchmarks they want. I want to know what they do with DaVinci Resolve and Lightroom Classic on battery. I don't play games, or mine cryptocurrency. I do use Final Cut Pro and Graphic Converter, which are Mac only.

2020 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 14" VR Ready FHD Gaming Laptop,8 cores AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS(Upto 4.2 GHz Beat i7-10750H),Backlight,HDMI,USB C,NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650,Gray,Win 10 (24GB RAM|1TB PCIe SSD) $989 Weights 3.04 pounds. I bought something like this last Christmas for $849 but it only had 16gb of ram.

8-Core CPU
14-Core GPU
16GB Unified Memory
512GB SSD Storage¹
16-core Neural Engine
14-inch Liquid Retina XDR display
Three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI port, SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3 port
Magic Keyboard with Touch ID
Force Touch trackpad
67W USB-C Power Adapter
$1,999.00
Ryzen 4800 beat M1 in multicore Similar to M1 Pro 14" macbook pro at $1999

Davinci Resolve free version does not have codec for hardware acceleration for PC. But still Ryzen keeps up and is faster with Adobe premier, that is because it has the equivalent of 16 cores.

You simply stated no one moves from the mac to a pc. I showed you someone that did, yet you dismissed it. Then you bring up all this criteria that a PC has to meet but the PC was behind when M1 chip came out, That is not true now as far as speed, but still behind on efficiency. You then claim Mac is better, if it was then it would outsell competitors but it doesn't because mostly price and non upgradability.

Now you can debate the differences but mac cannot play games which is taxing on the whole system more than most applications. As far as efficiency and silence M1 wins, but most people I know don't unplug their laptop and do video editing. If you need that, then mac is your computer, but the mac has half the ram, half the storage and is double the price.

Next round of AMD chips use smaller nm chip design which will be more efficient.

You said "Apple is, off and on, the most profitable company in the world"
That is because they are overpriced, charge their customers more money basically gouging their customers.. Go APPLE! LOL
