To use this program does the photos have to be RAW? This for your response.

No! But if it's raw it must be NEF as it doesn't support raw files from any brands other than Nikon. But while the raw conversion is quite good its editing capability isn't all that great.

The editing tools are even less useful for non RAW files.

In total agreement. It is my favorite editor for NEF data. After I do basic adjustments then I save the file as a TIFF and in Affinity Photo I do the final editings to the file. It works for me.
The reason why I use NX Studio is because it is an editor that was specifically designed for NEF files. Colors in a print appear exactly as reproduced by the editor. I have tried Affinity Photo with my RAW data but except for sunrises or sunsets the colors are not the same as those reproduced by NX Studio.
I have no experience with other editors but if you ask my printing technician he will recommend this editor for NEF files for the most accurate colors.

I like NX Studio for my editing, it does what I want because I typically do minimal editing, mostly cropping and some minor tweaking. Most important for me, I have three different Nikon bodies and NX Studio handles the NEF files from all of them.

It comes with a 268 page manual. While it cannot match the features of other RAW processors that cost money, if your images are captured correctly in camera, the local and other adjustment features in NX Studio might be all that you need. Check out the manual and see if it has what you need.

I use it a lot to cull images as it opens the imbedded Jpeg a lot faster than Adobe products. For images with tricky color palette I use NXStudio to do basic stuff, save a Tiff, and take the Tiff into other programs as needed. I am partially color blind so I rarely adjust colors in an image.
