Because in most male American Redstarts the yellow feathers shown in this photo are red and some Ornithologist who collected and described it in the 16 or 17th century named it that.

Beautiful little bird and beautiful photos of it! I too am surprised at the ID. Is this a mutant or a juvenile coloration?

Thanks. I'll have to look it up! Very interesting. The male isn't red either. Yellow and orange. The Painted Redstart IS red! I've learned something today!
