I wonder if those blocks were cast on site, they did a lot of that around here in the 30's , 40's and 50's

"Barn" is the function. The materials and style can vary greatly. Also, there are different types of barns. Dairy/milking, horse, farm machinery, hay, tobacco, etc.

In some cases the bottom floor is the barn for animals, machinery etc. and instead of a hayloft up above is housing for farm hands or even the farmer's family.
