How are the fall colors, as of today ( 9-30-2022 )? schedule a trip, a while back: land in Albany, drive the path through several state parks such as Letworth, and the Scenic Byway, over to Niagara Falls, Every year, no matter where I head to, I am too early, too late, weather was too dry, weather was too wet, etc. I have the option to delay the trip if people advise me to do that. BTW, if there are any particular spots to shoot from, let me know; I have done a lot of research on Google.
Thanks in advance.

Color has always been verrrry tricky to forecast and in the past few years it much trickier.
If you can hit a good day, the thruway west bound follows the Mohawk River. The river is accessible at many places, and the hills all along the north bank display color nicely as they rise. The afternoon sun hits at a favorable angle and you can get colors reflexted in the water. Best of all, no weird lenses are needed (or even applicable) so you can use your PL to good effect without weirding out the sky.
I have done this job (on a "failure is not an option" basis) and it was an all day project, invoving rather long lenses and scouting locations on the hillsides on the south side for a view of the north side.

exaactly why I am hoping there are UHHers who live up in the area and can give me a current report - I will ask again, maybe a day or two before I leave to head up there for another report.

My Firefox isn’t showing me the URL for it so do a search for:
THE 2022
Fall Foliage Prediction Map
Right now it’s a tad early.
Just popped up:
https://smokymountains.com/fall-foliage-map/ This is for the entire US, not just the smoky mountains

Ten years ago, when we lived in Mass, fall tended not to live up to its press clippings. Beautiful colors come when all trees change at the same time, so you get reds, oranges, and yellows all at the same time. Our younger daughter - who was attending college in Indiana - asked me to send a photo of nice “colors”, but in four years, I never was able to do it; we tended to get a color plus some leaves already brown plus some still green all in the same view. Perhaps this year will be different, but don’t count on it. Even if a local resident were to tell you “tomorrow”, rain may have washed the colors away before you drove the 2000 miles there. Perhaps you could get plane tickets to get you there in time, but I wouldn’t count on getting local useful info.

well, thanks - you really have kind of summed it for me, but, I never really put it together the way you just did.
I have plane reservations, rental car, hotels, etc. all scheduled. but, even though it might cost me some to change, or to come on short notice, I would rat her absorb the added cost, but know that I am headed for good stuff, rather than just come anyway, and the money is not well spent. again, your perspective was right on
You need to come to Northern New York, it the area between Adirondack Mountains and Canada. The trees are changing now.
I live in the utica area an 1 1/2 hours west of albany our color here is maybe 10% The adirodacks should be peak in a week or so, our peak in central NY is usually October 10th give or take 5 days. I was thinking of driving north this weekend, If I do I will let you know what I find.

I live on the Hudson a few miles from the confluence with the Mohawk. No hints of color here on Oct 1st. Nights are in the 40s, no frost so far.
We are in the Rochester area, and only a few trees have started to change. We also have property in the Adirondacks where it will go below freezing a few nights nest week. I'll be going up there next weekend and expect to see some brilliant colors. In two weeks, my wife and I will be checking out Letchworth.
