Go to You Tube and watch videos by Laura Shoe or Anthony Morganti about moving LR Catalog and files.

Very good directions from both and you will feel comfortable in making the moves.

As CHG_CANON has suggested, it is really not that hard. Just move the main folder with all the photos in it to the external drive, then launch Lightroom (which will complain that the photos are missing) and point it to the new location.

For a more comprehensive guide google for "Lightroom Queen"; she has a free ebook on all kinds of "moving Lightroom" scenarios

What happens to sidecar files (edits associated for the images) if you only copy the image files? I don't want to loose my work.

This is one advantage of organizing by folder. If you have sidecar files, they're in the folder with the images. If you want to move the images, you move the folder.

And I recommend having sidecar files. If, for any reason, your catalog gets corrupted and you have to go to a backup but the backup doesn't have your recent files, importing files with sidecars next to them will place your old edits into the LR catalog.
