Hey I have any enquiry on which would be the best Lense to use when travelling overseas n need to pack light.well first I need a Lense for landscape, street photography n occasionally a distance shot but don't want to take a number of lenses with me.would love to hear everyone's opinion on the subject.my kit consists of a sigma 10-20mm wide lens, sigma 150-500mm n canon 15-85mm.was thinking maybe I need to invest in a 70-200mmm

Lumpski, not sure exactly what you are asking. Are you taking only one lens? Or are you taking all of those and are thinking of adding the 70/200 to take in addition to what you already have. If I took only one, I would take the 15/85, you already know how good it is. If I wanted to add a lightweight 70/200, I would add the f4 non IS. It's very small and light as well as inexpensive. I have traveled with those two and will admit I did not use the 70/200 very much. It will depend on what you will want to shoot or if you just want one good walk-around.
On my last trip abroad(w/o a car), this is what I took: 17-40, 24-105, 70-200, 50 f1.4, 1.4x, 15" travel pod, flash and a variety of filters, memory cards and 1/2 terabyte toad. Hope this helps.
Sorry did not see you are backpacking.
One lens, 15-85
Two lens, add the 10-22
I don't think the 70-200 is long enough to be of much value. Not long enough for animals unless they are bears.

Just come back from France-- took 15-85, 70-200 and 50mm f1.8. I used the 15-85 almost exclusively ( probably used it for 700 out of the 750 pics I took, and would take only that lens if i wanted to go light. Maybe pack the 50mm as well as it is small and very light but I wouldn't bother with the long lens at all.

Agree... with a "Nikon slant": On a recent trip to Italy, I took my Sigma 10-20 and Nikkor 16-85. Almost exclusively used the 16-85, with the 10-20 coming in handy for some interior and exterior architectural shots. If I took one, it would be the 16-85.... You can always stitch for the wide angle/pano type shots.

I'd go with your 15-85 if I were you, maybe add a short 1.8 or 1.4 for low light, my kit would be Sigma 17-55 and Canon 50mm 1.8, those are what I use 90% of the time, Bob.

I have traveled around the world with my Nikon 18-200 and found that it fit almost every shot that I wanted. With only one lens you will not get everything exactly right, but how much you can carry is certainly the counterpoint to the perfect lens array. If you can find a lens with this range, I would highly recommend it.

I agree... I would even take a solid P&S over all this gear.

yer i think ill take the 18-85mm but still humming n harring over the 10-20 as i usually keep it around 12mm n i love the fact its wider than the 18-85 for landscape shots.

Lumpski, not sure on your zoom lens. Is it the 15-85 with the silver ring(?), or is it actually something else?
It would make a difference to me. If it IS the 15-85, if it were me, I would probably leave the 10-20. Yes, the 10-20 is quite a bit wider but if I were to take a second lens, for my style of shooting I would pick up a cheap, fast lens for indoor/low light, like the 50/f1.8. And of course for more money the better and faster 50/1.4. My choices may not be yours though, since only you will know your actual needs. Very big difference between 10mm vs.18mm. less so on the 10mm vs. 15mm., but both will make quite a difference on a crop Camera. Be glad to help in any way I can. Good Luck Limpski and have a great trip, I'm jealous !

No matter what you take, it will be a compromise...you know that; right?

If you go short, then you are limited to what a short lens does well. If you go longer, then you are limited to what that lens does.

It depends on what you want to do...there is no "one size fits all" answer to this.

I wouldn't bring just ONE lens on a long trip...but if I was FORCED...I'd choose a lens and then be happy with what it does well and not fret over what it cannot do.

I agree. If I was traveling, I'm sure I'd be quite satisfied with my new Canon SX40. I've traveled before with some good point and shoots, with good results, so no doubt I'd do just as well, if not better, with the SX40. One camera, under two pounds, fits into a small around the neck carrying bag - can't beat it.
