Snapped these Sunday at the Aransas National Wildlife Preserve.

Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorus), also called water moccasins, are venomous snakes (opens in new tab) found in the southeastern United States. They're called cottonmouths because of the white coloration on the inside of their mouths, which they display when threatened.

If you save the pictures then zip through them in sequence, it almost looks like a little animated movie. Full screen is best LOL

Plentiful here in South Florida close to any fresh water pond or stream. Extremely dangerous, do not get close.

As a kid in South Carolina we used to walk the creeks looking for blackberry bushes and we carried rocks to drive off water moccasins. It is the only snake that I know of that will come after you. Thankfully I never ran into large one like this.

My favorite snake is one I have just shot with a 12 ga and birdshot. I have found that they are less likely to come after you in that condition.

Nasty critters. Can be very aggressive. A couple of years ago I came across one of about the same size on a walkway in a protected “birding area” on Galveston Island.

I gave him a very wide berth. Some folks don’t understand that “Cottonmouth” and “Water Moccasin” are the same thing. Unfortunately the common (and harmless) water snake in Texas ponds can look very similar.
