TheOnlinePhotographer blogger Mike Johnston had an article highlighting a YouTube video of a talk given by Sam Abell, the great National Geographic photographer.

Almost two hours long and I had to take it in several "bites" over a couple of days, nevertheless it was very interesting and valuable to me. This was much more than a bunch of great photos put up one after another.

He talked about his career at National Geographic and how an assignment would go, the good and the bad. Most helpful was showing several versions as he "worked" the photo and the value of being ready and then just waiting.

Talked about one assignment in Moscow where he shut himself in his hotel room on his day off and took TWELVE hours to work a view of pears on his windowsill!

National Geo photographers get to take 20K to 50K images to get 8 to 10 good ones... the best equipment in the world, best places, etc. at NO expense to them.. so they do their job, sure enough, but I am not sure they are as GOOD as some hype them up to be...

I started watching this and I am really enjoying it... I can relate to his journey even though I never, ever found his 'heights', I enjoyed working in a black & white darkroom in the basement as a 'teen'!!! Thanks for sharing!

No Sir .On assignment on those days an stacked Carousel trays 24 to 36 slides with stories with the photographer explanation and stories behind shots .usually after thru health check such as Malaria chicken pox wounds and mosquito bites animal bites snake bites .That's the way it was and is as of today.
