My recommendation...Don't.
If you do some homework there are many slot canyons in both Arizona and Utah where you can go on your own, spend as much time as you wish, usually with no one else there. While Antelope may arguably, be the best, some of the lesser/unknown ones are very good and worth a little investigation to find out about.

Certainly there are many other slot canyon choices that folks may prefer, and I have seen great shots from some of these.

But I would not say don't go to Antelope Canyon . The surety of the Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon experience may be preferable for many travelers.

As I mentioned, after we finished touring Upper Antelope Canyon, our Navajo guide took us to another nearby slot canyon (all in the same tour time), and I got some of those shots of Environmental Scientist Brooke H. with very different slot canyon scenery than in Upper Antelope Canyon .

Cheers and best to you all.

I agree. Especially if the traveller has some time constraints. But I'm not the "follow the leader of the flock" kind of guy and can't abide being in a crowd when experiencing something ethereal and possibly not to be seen again. I'll choose the go it alone option every time!! An entirely different/better experience!

Doing the Deluxe Tour of Lower Antelope canyon there was just the four of us from our personal group in our tour, no outsiders at all. The Deluxe Tour of Lower Antelope Canyon was the way to go for our four, and was worth the added cost everyone agreed.

And after doing Upper Antelope Canyon in a larger group, our Navajo tour guide asked who wanted to go to another nearby slot canyon and only the three of us in our party, me, Brooke and her mom did the other slot canyon, so again no crowds for the best shots.

Certainly nothing wrong with going another way. I am usually the first to initiate that and do that in my long photography career, and it has gotten me many great exclusive shots. But I would never say that it was always a better experience. LOL

Cheers and best to you.

When I made the trip to Upper a few years ago the ride to and from cave entrance in the back of an open truck generated incredible clouds of dust and dirt. Bring airtight bags for all your equipment - and ask before if this still is the case.

That can depend on how much rain or how little rain there has been in the area lately. And how windy it is on your tour date. Yes the trip to Upper Antelope Canyon can be dusty if you have a fast tour-guide driver and a totally open vehicle.

The last time I went to Upper Antelope Canyon was in a covered humvee-type vehicle from the tour group, and it wasn't too bad. Photos below. As you can see there is both hard-packed and loose sand along the tour-vehicle-only route to the entrance to Upper Antelope Canyon. The Upper Antelope Canyon Tour group had different type vehicles to transport the tour groups to the entrance of Upper. I was glad our vehicle wasn't totally open.

Cheers and best to you.
