Last week my wife and I road the Cass Scenic Railroad to the top of Bald Knob, West Virginia’s third highest mountain. Cass is community established in the early 1900’s solely as a lumbering center. The train engine (circa 1910) is powered by steam produced from burning coal. From 1910 to 1930 the train hauled 126,000 board feet of timber per day. Beautiful scenery and great experience!

Send a PM to Admin asking it be moved.
In addition, as a backup, you can click on Report Issue and select Wrong Section, then click on Submit Report.

I thought most interesting was how they went forwards - then backwards - then forwards again - while passing a train going the other direction - on the ‘switchbacks’.

The neatest thing about Cass RR is the collection of geared locomotives -- 5 Shays, 1 Heisler and 1 Climax.

Many industrial applications require a low speed locomotive with ample starting tractive effort. These industries range from mining and quarry operations to forestry and logging operations. Steeply graded lines, especially when the track is cheaply built and not suited to high speeds, will also favor the usage of a locomotive with a high tractive effort. The geared locomotive was developed to meet this need.
