The first one has a lot of great potentials. I'd have cropped it, both vertically and horizontally, at the upper left corner of the wall. That would remove the potentially distracting dark area on the left. At the same time, it would locate the subject a bit more classically at the 1/3 from the edge looking towards the center.

This was a common sight in and around New Orleans. Sad situation. Good image Glover, but I also agree with Bob's suggestions.
