Norfolk Southern

I'm not sure what the experience of larryepage is, when he describes the Norfolk Southern as being underpowered and underspeed. The tracks near us are a major rail-line from Chicago to New York and Massachusetts.
It was run by the New York Central, then by Penn Central, then by Conrail, now Norfolk Southern{as far as Cleveland}. Perhaps it is a matter of heritage, but the trains through here tend to move. This morning I caught several '"container" trains. There is a major yard perhaps ten miles east of us; trains tend to stop there to refuel, but they are moving again by the time they reach the city park where I tend to watch them, so I can get far enough away to get a decent view. Only when I viewed these photos on my computer did I notice that the lead black locomotive is labeled "Penn Central"; it is fairly new, so it may have been purchased by the NS, then labeled as part of their program to honor predecessor railroads - I will have to research that.

Very nice shot. You should offer it to them for their brochure, with appropriate attribution and several copies for you for sharing.

The web already has a photo of a roundhouse, with tribute diesels on the spokes and a ‘PC’ SD70 on the turntable. Yeah, this one is working, but it was neat in seeing the photo when my brain saw just a string of black locos when looking through the viewfinder!

Here in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia (USA), Norfolk Sothern is the major rail enterprise. Since my eyesight has deteriorated even more, I am totally dependent on someone taking me to the tracks. So, thanks for a familiar sight to bring warm memories. --Richard

I just could not let my memories rest. So, I went back and picked this photo up from 2017-03-15. --Richard

P.S. I don't really know the details of the protocol here on UHH. Should I have started a new thread with this photo?

I don’t care, so it’s fine.
At one time I included global approval, but I erased it as a part of my going ‘on vacation’ from UHH.

It is interesting - thanks

The Penn Central Unit is one of the heritage units. Norfolk Southern had units painted in the color schemes and lettering of all the railroads that make up the Norfolk Southern system. i.e. Pennsylvania, New York Central, Wabash, Nickle Plate, Southern, Norfolk & Western, and others.

I did see a “Virginian” locomotive several years back; the Virginian was a coal-hauling railroad that was merged into the Norfolk & Western something like 60 years ago. The N&W and Southern are the two railroads that merged to form the Norfolk Southern
