Why are my NEF images locked?

I am downloading images on my Mac in Finder. I have selected RAW and JPEG Fine in the camera. When I open the NEF images in preview they are locked. I can't import them to Lightroom. This has just happened as I was able to get them into Lightroom several weeks ago.When I highlight the file and go to File/get info the locked box is not checked. I must have changed something on the computer and not have realized it. For the life of me I can't figure it out, HELP!

Are they on/were they ever on an optical disc? (CD, DVD, or BluRay)
Preview cannot edit raw files. Use an app that is made for it. (Raw Power, a $40 buy in the App Store, is a good example.)

No, SD card right out of the camera. I have been importing photos for years without any issues. I am perplexed.

Can the camera be set to protect images (read only)?

I don't think that is the issue as I have tried cards out of several cameras which were previously able to download photos to finder without the photos being locked. I then made folders which I then imported to Lightroom.

But that was before you used THIS card.
Possible a camera setting was changed between then and now?

Is the CARD lock switch on? All camera flash memory cards have a switch to write protect the card.

There is not a lock on the card. This has affected all my files in My Lightroom folder in Finder. All my files going back 5 years.

Almost like the directory has been set to read only maybe in the operating system?

I have used several cameras and no setting changed. Also one camera with SD card and one with XQD card. Also checked read and write settings.

Checked read and write and they are not locked. I am puzzled. It might be a time to call Apple Support?? Problem is I am leaving for Yellowstone and Grand Teton Thursday early. Not enough time. To busy prepping for the trip.

If the locked box is not checked, the files are not locked.
Have you tried not opening them in preview? Just import them.
Are you trying to import them directly from the card? Try copying them to your drive first.

I did what you suggested and they solved the problem. Thank you. It was an issue with Lightroom, updates were not current. Thank you
