but you can’t exclude weight - it truly is an issue for some of us.

We live within something like four blocks of the entrance to the parking area of the county fair grounds.

Last year we walked there, then around the Fair, with me lugging my Pentax DSLR KP; I just barely made it back home. This year my Wife suggested that we drive there, but I took my MILC Pentax Q-7 instead, and I made it the whole way, with my Wife agreeing that this was much better. I had realized that I take most photos before sundown, so even my small-sensored Q-7 should be OK. Missing photos because I didn’t want to lug a DSLR is a “photographic quality” to me.

Likewise, I’ve been taking the Q-7 when we walk around State and County parks. It is “only ’recording my life’ ”, but I would feel undressed without a camera {with a telephoto lens - my iPhone wouldn’t count}

Last year, these guys were there - the only time I've seen them in the nine years we have lived here.
I now it is not great art, but if I hadn't photographed them, I feel our trip would have been incomplete.

The weigh of the camera is a feature. I prefer heavy camera while I don't like large camera. I like the camera which has high density.

Photographic qualities would be accurate ISO settings, accurate shutter speed settings, accurate aperture settings, and accurate focus indication. Things that are pertinent to making a photograph, or at least the initial capture.

Would you please explain or define "photographic draw". Its clear that lack of same is unraveling the "discussion".

A very simple matter of physics. More mass would be more stable.

If you want to be a better photographer, there are two things you must do above all others: buy a mirrorless camera and use it.

If the camera is not there, there will be no photograph to worry about the settings of;
I am a follower of "Weegee" Fellig - the most important part of his aphorism is "be there".

What is the photographic reason for the desire to have a mirrorless camera? I'm just curious as to what is the attraction. I'm looking at the photographic draw for these cameras.

Dear Hoggers: I am not sure why people want to buy a mirrorless. Supposedly it is the latest and greatest. I don’t believe that. Years ago, I had (still do) a Canon AE-1. I was told that the day I bought it I would shoot the best photographs ever!
NOPE! NOT TRUE! ALL LIES
After a few years I learned photography. Then an upgrade to Canon EOS Rebel 2000. I was told that the will take my photos to a new level. Wait for it….

ALL LIES! NOPE! NADA!

After a few years, and relearning photography, my photographs showed it.

Eventually I had made a great deal of overtime money. So I bought a Canon 5D Mark II. It took me a little while to relearn everything. I just bought a Mark IV. I’m still learning.
I have a friend who is drooling over an R3. That nice. But it will be a while before I make the plunge. Mirrorless may be better and it may not be. As for buying a beast like that, the price tag would impress many but not me.
I don’t think I’ll make a try unless it is handed to me to evaluate. That won’t happen any time soon

Mirrorless cameras through and through are miles ahead of DSLRs these days. That goes even for the most affordable mirrorless cameras. It’s night and day, truly. The only people who think a DSLRinosaur can still be mentioned as comparable to a MILC is someone who doesn't have a mirrorless camera.

Not all lenses, but then there's no way in which DSLR lenses are better. Read my original post: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-752473-1.html#13440932

You make it seem like you don't read my posts, and that hurts my feelings.

Why do I love mirrorless? Let me count the ways:

1. Smaller body by removing the space needed for that yesteryear flapping mirror.
2. IBIS that turns every lens into a stabilized lens, even the golden oldies of the manual focus, pre-electronic ages.
3. EVF with shimmering highlights of the plane of focus.
4. Histogram available for display in electronic view finder (EVF).
5. Detailed 10x zoom in EVF.
6. Silent (not a single noise) shutter.
7. Extreme frames per second, 20+.
8. Image playback in EVF for review when LCD impossible to see in bright light.
9. Image playback at 10x zoom in EVF.
10. Sharper mirrorless lens designs.
11. More ultra fast lenses as sharp wide open as any stepped down DSLR lens ever.
12. One digital platform supporting portfolio of legacy DSLR lenses, legacy SLR lenses and modern mirrorless lenses.
13. Autofocus beyond f/8 for extended configurations.
14. Platform for any / all ongoing technology advancements in digital photography.
15. EVF that displays the results of the image before shooting.
16. EVF that allows for ad hoc updates like boosting the ISO for a brighter focus view, then restore ISO and shoot, without even lowering the camera from a shooting position.
17. Entire frame available for selective AF position.

I'm sure I missed probably several others.

NO! Buy a high end point 'n shoot, put it on auto and use it. Concentrate on composition and light. There are more than enough perfectly exposed photos that are boring.

If none of those 17 things are important to me, it does make them comparable.....
They're cameras.
They take pictures.

There are three classes of photographers: those that see the importance of mirrorless cameras and everyone else.
