thinking of going to Jackson Hole and or Rocky Mountain NP in late Sept / early Oct; if lucky I will catch some fall foliage along with the elks. anyone out there with suggestions as to equipment, timing, locations, etc. ?

I was in RMNP the first week of Oct, 2014 and the elk were still very active. Many great photo ops then. But, things may be different with different weather patterns now. Hope you have a great trip.

Ed, I realize you probably already have the trip in motion, but if your interest is in getting photos of Elk in the rut,try running up to Benezette,Pa. to the Elk Counrty Visitor Center. Great place to see and phot Elk. It's alot closer than Wyoming, not quite as elevated or as awesome vistas but still pretty cool area. I was there last week and the rut is on.

The Elk Rut In Rocky Mountain National Park usually runs from Mid-September to Mid-October. We had a family cabin outside of RMNP for over 40 years and that's always when it happened.

There is a guide service there from vehicles that is very good and pretty affordable. It's been awhile so I'm not sure but I think I remember it's called "Yellow Wood" or something close to that. Those guys KNOW the Park and the animals! They will pick you up from any nearby hotels, motels, or campgrounds starting very early in the mornings.
