We’ve been watching this grow in our back yard. At first we thought is was a weed. Then the “flower” started to grow out of the top. Now we’re not so sure.
A weed is a plant that humans have no use for.

Flower ► loved
Weed ► hated
Most all "flower".
Some weeds are very pretty.
Bees (insects) don't care.....
But they do have their favorites.

Thank all of you for your quick replies. Yes, it sure looks like a Canna Lily now that I know what to look for.

A weed is a plant growing where you don't want it. "Weed" is not a scientific term. That blooming plant is beautiful. I wish it where in my yard.
Definition of a weed: simply "a plant out of place."

Yep! You beat me to it. Sometimes called a canna lily. It's beautiful.
I know what you mean about not knowing what's growing in your yard. I'll see something growing, and I let it grow to see what it turns into. Usually, it's a weed.

Corn is one of the world wide staple food stuffs. Millions of people would starve without it. It started out as a weed. Wheat, same, same. Amaranth, same, same. Although not quite as essential as a food stuff. "weeds" feed the world!!
I've just been made aware of an iPhone app called "plant identifier" which tells you about a plant by pointing your phone at it
Haven't tried it yet
My app says that it is a species of Canna called Indian Shot.
