Comments on the quality of light please.
I have an idea for an interval ( opening of a flower) shoot in the spring, since it maybe a bit breezy and the light will be constantly changing, I'm going to use a studio strobe ( because I have them) the shots were different power settings and through a 4" homemade snoot to control the spread of light and with a double layer of diffusion paper to soften the light.

Sorry I forgot the images

I prefer #2. More highlights/contrast IMHO.

Increasing strobe intensity decreases the effect of ambient.

I personally prefer more coherent/parallel light over diffuse light. This more nearly approximates sunlight (direct sunlight anyway) and creates sharper shadows and increases contrast. Coherent light is difficult to achieve with a flash and of course if you use diffusion paper then you will get diffuse light. To achieve a more coherent light I've been wanting to experiment with bare flash bulbs bounced off silver mylar paper. Another way would be to use a tight black grid over your improvised soft box.

since my final session will be out doors I may go for bare bulb
Light box? I used a 4" snoot with diffusion paper over the end. I prefer softer shadows with flowers.

Sorry, I meant improvised soft box. I was referring to your paper/flash solution.

Soft light definitely works for flowers. I can imagine a photo where light seems to come from everywhere.

Oh had me wondering for a bit, I have been using Roscoe diffusion paper for years and Kleenex tissue on speed lights.
