Black grips on camera bodies

Recently I cleaned up an old (circa 2004)Canon Eos digital camera for a friend. I noticed that my hands had black streaks on them and that the camera felt sort of sticky. Is there anything that can be applied to the camera body to prevent this?
Thanks for your help.

I had old binoculars and a mini Radio Shack shortwave receiver that did that. The rubber coating got very sticky and was comming off onto my hands. I used old rags and denatured alcohol, being very careful to not let any get inside. It took a lot of work and the smooth plastic under the rubber grip material was fully exposed, but I could continue to use the devices.

I use rubbing alcohol and a clean soft cloth. Stickiness gone.

Baking soda works well.

Just dry baking soda? I'm not convinced.

Add water and make a paste. Rub it on and wipe it off with a wet rag. I had tried rubbing alcohol and it didn't work for me. This did.

I've successfully used this product. It might take several applications, but it leaves a like-new surface which does not seem to deteriorate further.

I got mine at AutoZone, but I think Advance as well as Napa, Walmart etc. sell it. Other manufacturers make a similar product. West Marine sells a similar product from 3M. Meguiar's also has a Marine version.

The take away is that this is a common auto and boat maintenance problem, so more solutions in these much. much bigger markets.
