Sorry for the title, pretty lame. I was wondering if anyone has the problem I do when pressing the shutter button? I have a tremor in button finger and tend to lunge into a shot rather than squeezing off a shot. I was interested if anyone has a mental approach to pushing/squeezing the shutter button? Once in a while, I manage to get it under control, but it takes a lot of concentration. Wondering if anyone has a thought process just before pushing the button. Thanks

Try using a tripod. Or if you camera has a two second delay.

Is this a new thing? Do you have the tremor when using the finger for anything else, writing, eating etc? Does it only involve one finger or the entire hand, say if you hold a coffee cup? Does the cup shake? Is the other hand affected in any way? Where I'm going is wondering if this is a medical issue. Tremors can run in families. Tremors can be a sign of Parkinson's or a number of other things. I'm not meaning to worry you, but I do have a medical background, and if you came to me as a patient with this complaint, I might seek the advice of a neurologist.

I put my finger on the shutter release button, enough pressure to keep it half press. When I want to take the shot I apply pressure to push down the shutter release button. I do not let go of the button until I am sure the image was taken.

Rather than using ball tip portion of your finger to trigger the shutter, place the ball tip portion of your finger slightly past the shutter button and on the solid part of the camera. That way when you "lunge" with your finger, the tip of your finger is already on the camera and not just the shutter. You will have to make sure that your finger behind the ball tip of your finger is in contact with the shutter. That way when your finger moves, it fires the camera without a "lunge" because your finger tip is on the solid part of the camera.

I have the same problem with essential tremor.

It seems that if I get tip of my finger on the center of the shutter button and press slowly until it fires a high percentage of shot go with no or minimal jump. Relaxing arm and hand as much as possible helps too. All bets are off if it's a get-it-now-or lose it shot.

High ISO and shutter speed helps also.

The best solution is a tripod and remote shutter, but that isn't always possible.

If you haven't yet you might check with your physician. There are medications and procedures that can help diminish tremors.

Would back button focus help with this issue?

Essential tremor is a benign condition but can be annoying. Beta blocking medicine can be helpful but may drop blood pressure and pulse rate.

"...seek the advice of a neurologist..." Wisdom

The radial nerve (responsible for fingers) originates from several nerve roots that run from:

C5 to C8 cervical vertebrae
and the T1 thoracic vertebra

MRI scans typically are a diagnostic tool of choice...
Albeit a simple neurological exam can be done with minimum equipment.

Please seek guidance from a qualified medical professional... which you will unlikely find on UHH.

Likely not as pressing the shutter to fire has not changed.

Not necessarily true, but without a face to face examination and the results from appropriate testing, there can't be any meaningful opinion.

Yes, that's what my doctor has told me it is. I haven't been able to take beta blockers due to causing fatigue. My right hand is much better than my left. I actually changed from left to right hand for writing. I just feel like sometimes when I push the shutter button, I push the camera toward the subject matter. If I really concentrate, I can prevent it, but in a quick shot, that is my tendency. Thanks for your help.
