I discovered the problem with the slow portrait background processing. The program is smart enough to distinguish an owl from a person. I thought that since the large metal owl had the shape of a person, the program would accept it as a portrait.

Actually, I've been using NXStudio to process a bunch of NEF files, and it's working very well - for free. Free updates and upgrades.
