Very nice series of action shots!
What camera settings, if you don’t mind my asking. I assume f4 (w/ 1.4x TC).

Thank you.
I figured your ISO may have been high due to the graininess of the photos. At 400mm, I assume you didn’t have to crop much at all.

I started shooting for MaxPreps (as do several UHH members on this forum) late last year and learned a lot along the way, all thanks to these members. Noisy photos didn’t bother me much back then because I thought it was normal in low light settings, especially when you have to shoot at a higher shutter speed, and therefore higher ISO.

However, looking at photos from Jules, Rick or Tom, I learned from them that it doesn’t have to be that way.
If you want to reduce the grain in your photos, then you may consider 1) dropping the 1.4x TC and shoot 300 at f2.8, 2) reduce shutter speed to 1/1250 or 1/1000, 3) drop ISO to 12800 or somewhere nearby, 4) accept that you’re shooting 300mm, so let the action come to you and avoid cropping. Yes, you’ll miss some shots, but there’s always another game and another opportunity as I’ve learned.

In any case, I realize you didn’t ask for my advice or recommendations, so feel free to ignore them. I do not mean to offend anyone. You certainly have an eye for the action on the field.

Last year, I wouldn’t have noticed the grain, but once someone pointed it out to me and told me I could do better, it’s hard to overlook it now. Much like my friend, the car enthusiast, who showed me what defects to look for in a used vehicle (prior accidents, repair job, etc), now I look at cars differently now.

Have a great week,
Stephen

These are nice shots, you catch the action very well. Stephen is right, we are here to help everyone that wants it so don't take comments the wrong way. I can't believe you shot at that high an ISO. If I did that you probably wouldn't be able to tell what was in the photo. Keep posting I like your shots. Thanks BE SAFE!!

These are really neat action shots. I'm not a football fanatic, so I have a question. What was the call on the situation in the next-to-last image? And is it legal to do a gang attack like in #5?

You teach your players to go after it until the whistle blows. There are times when you could have 3-4 players grabbing the ball carrier and he will get loose and get big yardage or worse a TD. Thanks BE SAFE!!

I count 5 players in on the tackle. Like you say play until you hear the whistle. Last year I saw the same type of play they could not get this bruising runner down, broke all kinds of tackles and went for a 30 yard score. Hell of a runner this kid was.
