Todays lesson on Hummingbirds:
1). Yes, they have a tongue (which can extend the length of their bill)
2). They have a 3rd eyelid (called the nictating membrane)
Photographic proof of these and other pics follows.
Nikon D810 with Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 lens.
Very nice work! Thanks for sharing.
Are they the only bird that can fly backward? Or this Google misinformation
Google a left leaning search engine like face book and twiter
Flying backwards is something I personally have not witnessed. I do think it's possible though. Many on-line sites say it is so.

See my link to Audubon Society
Hopefully we are done with the 'flying backward' conversation. It seems my post has been side stepped by this issue. I would like to get back on track to the subject topic. Thank you.
A beautiful set. The bokeh sets him off wonderfully.
That tongue shot is special. Wonder how many shots were taken to get this one. Fantastic
Actually, both the tongue shot and the eye shot were quite a surprize during download. These hummers are so quick, and there were about 7 of them zipping around, so I just kept on shooting the one perched. He would fly away, come back, then fly away again. Thank you for viewing this post.

I saw a grackle fly from a feeder to a tree about 6 feet away and then flew backwards to the feeder. A lot of birds can fly backwards as a defensive move.
