Too bad you live so far from WV or I would have given you all you could use. I am not a real farmer but had a real crop of corn this year and gave away so much I felt like a market. Next year I don't think I will plant much at all, it is a lot of work! That is one thing I really like about being back in WV, so many friends grow gardens and in the summer we get calls all the time asking if we could use some food item that they grew too much of and we respond with out extra. Nice place to live if you don't have to work!

I didn’t think the sweet corn we eat was used in ethanol production.

That’s interesting. About 10 yrs ago we went on a cruise to New England & Canada. One of the excursions was in St. Johns. The guide told us that lobster was the main staple and that kids were embarrassed to have lobster for lunch at school. Apparently a sign that your family was poorer than others.

Funny

How much is corn on the cob in your area? I won't pay $0.50 for an ear of corn. It was on sale last week - 4/$1.00, so I bought eight. Not great corn, though. There is a local discussion online about the price. A guy said he stopped at a farm stand and was surprised that it cost him $8.00 for four ears. Other people paid $0.79 and $1.30 per ear.

Ethanol is great for the corn farmers and some others, but it's not good for the people.

the other day we got 4 ears for a buck, but it wasn't great....edible, but not the best...

I usually take my wife to the corn field and kiss her between the ears.

It's what the people wanted and voted for, paying more for everything. Too bad it doesn't only apply just to them. We pay at least 1/3 more every week for similar purchases than we paid in 2019.

Ethanol from corn is one of the great scams of politicians. They knew that they would pass legislation so they invested heavily in advance in fertilizer, herbicide, insecticide, and farm implement industries which when passed made the stock prices soar. Corn is a poor choice for ethanol production for many reasons in addition to competing with its use for feed and food products. Sugar beets are quite large and they contain much more sugar energy than an ear of corn, consume less water, and use fewer resources, however, the lobbyists swayed the politicians via political contributions to go with corn.

Not good for your car either and even worse for boats.

We really do not eat the same corn that is used for ethanol. The dimpled corn is used for ethanol, chicken feed, corn meal and other items.the corn we consume is only around 10% of corn produced.

We buy our corn, along with other vegetables, at a local farm market. It is delicious. We don't put butter or margarine on it. Quality food is more important than cameras, beer, wine, cars and liquor. Yes, everything is very expensive these days, including corn. I'd rather have and pay for quality food, than all the aforementioned items.

I have only one response to price complaints, “Elections do have consequences”.

There are large variations in the price of corn.

There are large variations in the quality of corn.

Yes, they do. Thank God we have only higher prices. Just think what might have been the consequences.

Ah, the days of sweet corn for 25 cents a dozen are long gone, but that was the price late in the season in New York State (70+ years ago.)

Yes, and what was the minimum wage? I worked for $.45 an hour when I was 14. I worked in my dad's independent food market for no wages and sold corn for $.19 a dozen in the mid 40's.
It's all relative. No, one cannot go back to the "good ole days" and many may not want to go back.
