East Point Lighthouse

Twice in the past year I've had the chance to visit East Point Lighthouse in Heislerville NJ. Despite being only slightly more than a one hour drive from center city Philadelphia it is one of the most out of the way remote locations I've ever visited. The area at one time was very busy and populated until a virus killed off the oyster industry in the Delaware Bay in the 1950's.
I've only been there in the winter, the area is surrounded by salt marshes, I'm sure the bugs outnumber the people by X 100000 at any given time during the summer. This is not a tourist area by any means.

Wow, I've been to Wildwood/Cape May dozens of times and didn't know about it either.
But that was way before Google Maps and search engines.......

Longshadow and MWojton follow RT 55 to the end, make sure you have your phone connection on and follow directions. Many of the back roads don't have signs on them. My grandson and I coming out of there last time didn't have the phone turned on, missed the turn and had a tour of the area in the dark.

I've been there a couple of times. The first time I was there I found an old house out in the marshes that looked like it fell out of the sky. There were no paths leading to it so getting close to it was quite a thrash. The house was bent (bad landing perhaps?) and the glass was missing but it was a great photo subject. I could see through it to the bay behind it. The last time I was there a few years ago I couldn't find any trace of it. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a figment of my imagination because I still have the pictures of it...

Beautiful series. I visited often when I lived about a 30 minute drive away. And yes, you're absolutely correct about the bugs. The Green-heads (vicious, man-eating flies) are just awful from May well into August.
