In mid-August 2002, a lightning strike ignited the Big Fish Fire, which swept through the Trappers Lake area and burned nearly 10 percent of the Flat Tops Wilderness. The fire destroyed eight cabins and the original Trappers Lake Lodge, with the building’s stone chimney the only remaining evidence of the eighty-year-old structure.
Twenty years later, you can see the area is recovering, but slowly.
Trappers Lake is remote, equidistant from Yampa and Meeker, and 10 miles off a maintained dirt and gravel road. The elevation is between 9,000 and 10,000 feet.
High 30’s at night and 70’s during the day. We camped in a tent but were unprepared for the long cold night. Now I know the difference between a $30 sleeping bag and a $300 bag=one sleepless, very uncomfortable, long night. Even Grady, the 2 year old Golden, wouldn’t sleep on the ground and insisted on sharing a single cot!
