I can understand you desiring softer lighting, but the focus is right on at the head of the subject!

I stand corrected. That is where it is focused. I should have said that the image is not very sharp so as to be annoying to my eyes. I confused focus with sharpness.

I could have used a smaller fstop for greater DOF. It was taken at f14 anyway. The flash is hard light, but it was in deep shade and handheld.

The battle between depth of field and sharpness. At some point when you stop down, the lens looses sharpness. You cannot help that. When shooting like that, you do not have a lot of flexibility in lighting. I still wonder how sharp the lens is. Thanks for responding.

I appreciate the comments because I'm always learning. I used the Nikkor Micro 105mm G lens for that photo.

That lens should be sharp. Nonetheless, I suggest testing it for sharpness. Put the camera on a tripod and shoot something printed. Some people use a newspaper taped to a wall. I use my bookshelf. The idea is that you know how sharp the letters should be. Shoot at every other f/stop. Look at the center and the edges. Let me know what you find.

Shoot with and without LiveView or whatever Nikon calls it. This will look for a focusing error, something that happens when using autofocus.
