Help with insect identification please

My wife (not of photographic inclination”called “there's strange bug on the deck”. Without thought I REPLIED “take a picture with your phone”. To my surprise she actually did and then came and asked “what is this ugly thing”? That question is above my pay grade, so can anyone help ID?

I don't know where you live but here in the midwest they are extremely common and have been all my life. They can be rather noisy on Summer nights.

Yep. Cicada. Our cats think they are quite tasty, even if the wings tickle on the way down! 😻

That’s just scary. But they have a wonderful song and I miss it now living out here in SoCal.
Did you know there is a wasp that preys on cicadas? I have seen it in action, in southern Illinois. Nature always has a balancing element.
