Rich,
Take a look at this YouTube, he does a good job explaining one technique that might work for you if you use LR and PS.
Good luck ~ Rich M

I’ve been using Luminar AI and Luminar NEO recently and have, but haven’t used, Aurora HDR for High Dynamic Range Photos… until TODAY! It is by far the easiest, most intuitive, straight forward editing program I’ve EVER worked with. It’s produced by Skylum which is Ukrainian based. Great product; HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

For Focus stacking I use Helicon Focus : My reasons: It is very user friendly and with my memory I need all the help I can get.My memory was used too much when new!! The price wasn't all that expensive.
I have seen stacking done with Adobe Photoshop but the learning curve is beyond me.
There is other software out there that I know little about.

Up until recently, I've used what a friend of mine and I refer to as We Did It. The other is Gigapan Stitch. The second one is free, as I recall. The first one cost a lot of hours. Here are two stitched panoramas I posted a while back. The first was done using Gigapan Stitch. The second was We Did It. I like either one but tend to be more attached to We Did It.

Affinity Photo does a great job of focus stacking and normal stacking (for noise reduction). It also works to add that silk effect to waterfalls using multiple subs (without the need for a tripod).

I use PhotoShop Elements (14) for my photo stacking and I learned how to do it in Scott Kelby's book "PhotoShop Elements for Digital Photographers."

I merge photos so seldom that I don't remember exactly how I did it, but I think I used Gimp to make the transparencies. But it was fun when my photography club scheduled a meeting devoted to merging, and the results of my effort were well received by members. The first one merges photos of a baker, a manikin and an old shed, and the second one merges multiple photos of fish in an aquarium on a background of the ocean taken through a submarine porthole in Hawaii. (I called the first one "Generation Gap.")
